File System Snapshot viewable somewhere?

Post by DavidLB »

I can't see where the File System Snapshots are viewable anywhere within the File Manager.
If I drop into a Terminal window, I see exactly where they are.
If I use the Snapshot app, I can make the snapshots viewable, but only for the snapshots for the shared folders I have explicitly created.
Couldn't you provide the same visibility when the File System Snapshots are enabled?
It can really be a pain to have to create individual snapshot tasks for each shared folder.
If the File System Snapshots were visible somewhere, I could walk to them to restore single files or folders from anywhere in the system.
I would only need the single File System Snapshot task and not even use the Snapshot app.
It also makes it a whole lot easier to delete snapshots to free up diskspace, if needed.

Thank you,
David

Look in Backup > File system snapshot
You can list the snapshots and restore.

I don't want to restore the snapshot, I want to open the snapshot in the File Manager.

So you have said on another thread. I thought, at the time, this was something different.

Found a workaround: open a terminal and cd to the directory you want to make access to the File System Snapshots visible.
Type: ln -s /var/subvols/<your subvol>/@sysSnapShoot/FileSystemSnapshots/ <- the typo sysSnapShoot is correct

This begs the question: is there a way to make symbolic links in the File Manager or is that just too much to ask?
Which begs another question: is there a way for an admin to access /?

Currently, the File Manager does not support creating symbolic links directly. However, you can use the terminal to create them as you have done.

As for accessing the root directory (/), admins can do so through the terminal with root privileges.

Currently, File System Snapshots are not directly viewable within the File Manager, which creates unnecessary complexity. While the Terminal allows access to their location, and the Snapshot app provides visibility, it is limited to shared folders explicitly created for snapshot tasks. This setup forces users to create individual snapshot tasks for each folder, which is cumbersome. Having File System Snapshots directly visible in the File Manager would streamline restoration, enabling users to access and restore files or folders from any part of the system without extra setup. It would also simplify disk space management, making it easier to locate and delete snapshots as needed, improving overall usability.
