Traid Setup - F4-223

Post by lopies »

I just picked up 3 Seagate Exos X20's 18TB. Should I add all 3 when I setup the Traid or use 2 then add the 3rd after synchronization?

You can use 2 HDDs for TRAID then add the 3rd after synchronization.

Hi - just curious - what's the benefit of delaying the inclusion of the 3rd drive?

The addition of the third hard drive can directly increase the overall storage capacity of the RAID system, serving as a hot spare or for other purposes. This significantly enhances data security, as if one hard drive fails, the mirrored data on another hard drive will remain available.

I get that, but you suggested to the user to add 2 drives first and then after synchonisation add the 3rd one in. Why is that better than just adding all 3 drives in the first instance?

Creating a RAID directly with three disks is certainly better than creating a RAID with two disks first. Although the results are the same, this can save time.
Although we don't know why you asked that at the beginning, we seem to have misunderstood it.

Ok it took over a day for the Triad to finish setting up with 2 drives. Then it finished almost 2 days later after adding the 3rd drive. Right after it finished it started the synchronizing all over again. Is this normal?

All done! Whew that took a while. Another 10 hours of synchronization. I am thinking because of size. Time to set up Plex.
