Update re 'initboot'

Just for the hell of it I prepared a live usb boot (linux Mint in this case since the Ubuntu via DVD took forever!). The first command 'wget' (checked and double checked resulted in a '404 Not Found' and was pointing to a different web site than in the example. (79.133.176.208)

Are you messing with us or is someone messing with you??????

Judging from the information you provided, these problems seem to be caused by hardware failures, such as motherboard failures or hard disk failures. I don't think it's related to BIOS or USB initboot. You don't need to update BIOS or USB initboot at all. Because once the system is installed on the hard disk, the system starts without going through USB. When you remove all the hard disks and turn on your TNAS, if TNAC PC can search for devices, it means that the motherboard, BIOS, and USB initboot are all working properly. You can try another good drive by installing a new system to verify the issues.

Agree with theory of all your points.
I am currently taking a step back and have used a (comparable) drive with TOS5.1.123 (Traid) installed while testing using Rsync to simulate typical use. To be 'safe' shut down overnight and - so far - device has been ok. But, only short time relatively. Adding 2nd drive will come later and, if that works, moving back to TOS6 which was running when issues came to light.

My main concern(s) lately were that, if I wished to do it, I could not happily build a new bios/initboot based of the instructions provided to date. I would certainly like to obtain a bios that allows for external usb boot on this device. Too often it seems we get directed to links that are not appropriate.

Your PM received and greatly appreciated. I'll keep that in mind.

Hi Gremlin,

I had the same issue with my F2-221, it was shutting down and as well turning on all alone always at a different time.

I have tried everything like you but at the end I disconnected the flat cable that connect the MB to the front panel and magic! the nas started and no reboot for 2 days.

reconnecting the flat cable I was able to turn on but it was shutting down after some seconds/minutes/hours randomly.

Finally I unscrew the front panel decided to replace the faulty power switch but before doing this I used a bit of WD40 on it and clicked the f***ing buttons 50 times and apparently it is working as new.

for now it's been 48 hours without shutdown etc etc... finger crossed.

Ahhh. I didn't go quite as far as you did. But, I did remove the switch/led panel from the front panel and cleaned that (Elec contact cleaner and compressed air.)

Maybe we have a proper suspect now :?: :?: :?:

My Nas has now been running solidly for 2 -3 weeks and back in Beta6 mode.
