"others" taking up 3/4 space, emailed support - deleted snapshot folders and uninstall Snapshot app. Empty recycle, file system defragment checked properties on all folders - all this has made no difference.

Generally speaking, these "other" spaces are likely occupied by snapshots, and even if the files are deleted, they will occupy space before deleting all related snapshots.

Delete the snapshot folder or uninstall the snapshot app wouldn't delete the snapshots. To release your space, you need to delete each snapshot before you uninstall the app.

Since I deleted the folder no way to do 1 by 1, so gave up and deleted volume1 and created new volume, but this time EXT 4. Everything is up and going.
