Fan replacement - F4-421

Post by YoYoYo »

Dear support,
i just bought 2 new fans noctua 80x80x25 to replace the default one on a nas F4-421 but the existing fans have a different connector then the standard connector used by a pc 4pwm. It is smaller, do you have a code or a model number for that connector you use ?
Thanks for your support

The size of the fan: 80*80*25mm
Power supply voltage of the fan: DC 12V
4pin terminal pitch: 2.5mm
Definition of pin:
Pin1: GND
Pin2: DC12V
Pin3: PWM Signal
Pin4: PWM Speed Signal

I just upgraded my fans. The stock fans are too noisy and vibrated at high speed on my new F4-423. I followed this post and pinned it out as listed in this thread. After fans only running at 100% and me pulling my hair out, I ripped open the factory fan. The factory fan is

Pin1: GND
Pin2: DC12V
Pin3: Fan speed (or tachometer, or speed sensor, basically the rpm of the fan)
Pin4: PWM wire

So to be clear - I purchased 2 - Noctua NF-A8 4pin 12v fans, I Cut off the 4 pin plug, and crimped on a new JST - XH male plug. and the wiring I did was -

Pin1: GND. - Black Fan wire
Pin2: DC12V. - Yellow Fan wire
Pin3: PWM Signal - Green Fan wire
Pin4: PWM Speed Signal - Blue Fan wire

Pin 1-4 on the JST XH is following this diagram for reference -

download/file.php?id=632&mode=view

It now works flawlessly. I do notice that the noctua uses a new speed sensor, and the monitor screen sometimes reads 0 Rpm, but comes back when the fan spins up faster again above 500rpm usually. So, outside of that flawless.

I am "frustrated" because I followed this post. I am hoping this helps someone upgrading their fans in the future. These are almost a factory drop in. You will need a jst xh crimper, but I'm a nerd and already had that. Amazon sells them for $25.

What pin size on the Dupont, please? (I see at least 2 sizes advertised.)
