Hard Drive Hibernation doesn't work?

Post by TMroy »

Troubleshooting

Applicable models: all models

If your hard drives are idle over a preset time, they will go into hibernation. But certain conditions, including volume status, services, apps, will prevent your TNAS from entering hibernation mode or wake up your TNAS from hibernation mode from time to time.

Important Note
  • For the newly set file system, it will take about 24 to 48 hours to do journal and balance for the btrfs file system, it will take about 12 to 24 hours to do lazy initialization for the ext 4 file system, during this time, your drive will not able to hibernate. The actual time required depends on the drive capacity. If you have copied big volume of file to your TNAS, the journal and balance going to take longer. To know more about journal and balance https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Btrfs
  • During drive hibernation, the drive indicators will stay on;
  • To confirm if your drive is in hibernation, touch the device body with your hand. if you don't feel any viberation, your drives may be in hibernation.
Reasons for preventing hard drive hibernation:

Volume Status
  • Volume degraded / crashed
  • Volume not created
Services in running
  • DDNS
  • LDAP: When your TNAS acts as an LDAP client.
  • File Services: When SMB/AFP/NFS is enabled, any SMB/CIFS broadcast packets may prevent the system from going into hibernation, including Windows Explorer running on the same network.
  • NTP: When NTP service is used to synchronize with other network devices
  • Thumbnails and indexing: While generating thumbnails or re-indexing multimedia files post-upgrade.
  • Windows Media Player: When Windows Media Player's Network Sharing Service is enabled in the LAN.
  • IPv6: When IPv6 is enabled, your TNAS might be woken up from hibernation
  • VPN clients
Your TNAS cannot hibernate if a number of concurrent processes require memory swap, where RAM capacity has been exceeded and HDDs are used temporarily for read/write operations.

Applications in running
  • Cloud Sync
  • DNS Server
  • Download apps: Transmission, qBittorrent, Aria 2
  • Docker
  • Mail Server
  • Media Server/DLNA Media Server: When DMA logging is enabled in Media Server settings.
  • Plex Media Server
  • Emby Media Server
  • Proxy Server
  • VirtualBox
  • VPN Server
  • WebDAV Server
  • Third-Party apps: When any third-party app is running.
Others
  • USB Devices: When any USB device is attached to your TNAS.
If you do not wish to disable any of the above apps or services, but still wish to save energy, you can set a power on/off schedule.

If the hard drive is still not in sleep mode after following the troubleshooting steps above, please fill in the relevant information in the TOS desktop > Technical Support > Reports Issues to generate a report. Hello, if you use docker and plex to read and write the contents of the volume, it will still cause the disk to not sleep. You can check whether the installed applications will read and write to the disk. In addition, if you log in to the system from a browser, the system will not sleep.

Of course I agree with you if I use the disks (volumes) (SATA) then they should not be in sleep. But I dont have anything yet. Only instaled apps. No containers no plex movies ect. That's is srtrange bahavior. All apps are installed to system volume NVME. The drives are scratching every 5 s. Take a look at the image below.

Even after deinstalation all of additional software, turn off the browser of TOS6 there are still scratches on the disk. You can check on the youtube I posted a short video (there are no disk spinning only this schratching every 5s). You can see also disk diode from slot 1 blinks.

Go to TOS desktop "support and help > report an issue > generate report" and generate a system report, send it to our support team so that we can study which process is touching your drive. if this report is big, you can upload it to your cloud drive and send a download link.

So I didnt recive any response yet but now my setup is working. What I did I have recreate the all volumes once again, but I think the importhant thing is that:
1. System Disk create FIRST as the first volume! I had as a secound volume. Even when I change the app storage still disk dont want to go sleep. I think there is a bug that some apps are instaled on the first volume. What is strange if I uninstall all apps still was bad :(
2. Volume two for SATA

Now the system is steady!
