Can't find my newly purchased TNAS on the network?

Post by TMroy »

Applicable models: All TNAS models

Issues Description:
The newly purchased TNAS device does not have the system installed. You must first initialize the newly purchased TNAS device and install the TOS system before it can work. Before initializing the system, you need to obtain the IP address of your TNAS device, and enter the IP address in the address bar of the computer web browser(recommended Google Chrome and Apple Safari) to access the system's setting page before initializing.

For some reason, you may not be able to search for your TNAS device on the network, that is, you cannot obtain its IP address, so that it cannot be initialized. If this happens, please refer to the following guidelines for troubleshooting. If your TNAS has been in use for a while, but suddenly can't be found on the network, it is most likely because your TNAS is disconnected or crashed, and you need to refer to other guidelines for troubleshooting.

Causes of the issues:
There are various reasons why the device cannot be found, such as device hardware failure, the system does not start properly, the network not being properly connected, or the TNAS being blocked by a firewall or antivirus software. Please refer to the following guidelines to troubleshoot one by one.

Before troubleshooting:
First, you need to follow the official quick installation guide to set up your TNAS step by step, make sure that your TNAS has been correctly connected to the network, installed the hard disk correctly, and has been powered on properly.

Hardware failure troubleshooting:
Please check the following items to ensure that your device is not faulty and that the InitBoot system of the device has started properly.
  • 1. Check if the power adapter is working properly. If the power supply is working properly, the power indicator on the adapter will be solid green.
  • 2. Whether the device is powered on normally. When the device is powered on normally, the power indicator will light up.
  • 3. Check that the main board of the device is working properly. After booting up, the power indicator and hard disk indicator will light up in green, and the network indicator will flash (some models have the network indicator on the back of the device);
  • 4. Check whether the device InitBoot system starts normally. If the device boots normally, you should hear a "beep" after 5 seconds of power on. After 20 seconds of booting, you should hear three "beeps" (only devices that have not installed the system will make three beeps, if they have been initialized, the devices that have installed the system will not emit three beeps) .
  • 5. If you added the memory module yourself, please remove the memory module you added and try again.
  • 6. Check if the system fails to boot due to a hard drive failure. Please remove all hard drives, reboot the system and try again(reboot without hard drive).
If the above items work normally, it means that your device is not faulty and the InitBoot system has been started normally. Please refer to the following guidelines to troubleshoot other items. Otherwise, please contact our customer service for further troubleshooting or device replacement.

Network troubleshooting:
  • 1. Check whether the network cable is properly connected to the router or switch. In order to eliminate the network cable failure, you can try to replace a network cable and try again.
  • 2. Check if your router has a DHCP server enabled. If you do not have a functioning DHCP server on your network, the TNAS cannot be assigned an IP address.
  • 3. Check if your computer and TNAS are in the same network. If your computer and TNAS are connected to different routers or switches, your device will not be found.
  • 4. If your computer or network has a firewall, security system or anti-virus software, please check whether your TNAS is blocked by these softwares. If so, you need to remove your TNAS from the block list; alternatively, you can temporarily disable your firewall or antivirus software and re-enable them after your TNAS initialization is complete.
Try different search tools:
If you've checked the above items and everything is fine, you can try different ways to search for your device. Here are some common methods, you can try them separately.
  • 1. Directly enter: http://tnas.local in the address bar of your browser (this method is only valid for uninitialized devices, since the name of the initialized device has been changed, this method is invalid).
  • 2. Install TNAS PC client on your Windows or macOS computer and use TNAS PC client to search. TNAS PC 5.0.33 or later version is recommended. When installing the TNAS PC client, if you are a Windows user, you must select "Trust" when Windows Defender prompts you whether to trust the software; if you are a macOS user, if the system prompts you "The software you installed is from an untrusted software Publisher", you need to allow the client to run in macOS "System Preferences > Security & Privacy" . TNAS PC 5.0.33 for Windows OS / TNAS PC 5.0.41 for macOS
  • 3. Find the IP through the router. You can log in to your router's configuration page and get the TNAS's IP address from the list of connected devices.
Supplementary
The above are the troubleshooting methods for searching for TNAS devices. If you check each item one by one, you will definitely be able to find a solution. If you need assistance during the above troubleshooting process, please contact our customer service staff.
