D5-300

If your TerraMaster USB DAS storage device has been correctly installed, but the speed of copying files is very slow (for example, only 5~20MB/s, or even slower), or sometimes even randomly interrupted.
Based on the cases we have served and observed in the past 10 years, we have summarized the following common causes and solutions:

Troubleshooting for random interruption during data transmission:

1. TDAS with RAID function may have incompatibility problems with old hard drives with data or random interruptions due to other factors.
①It is recommended that you try to replace the hard disk with a new one.
②Back up the data of the old hard disk, and then install the old hard disk on the TDAS. And try to create a new RAID array and format the hard drive.
Notice! This operation will clear the hard disk data, please back up the data before performing the operation.

2. There are many brands and models of Windows PC computers. The speed and quality of the USB interfaces or lines of different brands and models of computers may be inconsistent. When the USB interface of the computer is connected to an external hard disk box, there may be random interruptions during copying. It is recommended to eliminate the problem according to the following steps :
①The signal of the USB interface of some Windows computers is weak, it is recommended to try another USB interface; or try another computer.
②The public USB driver is pre-installed on the computer, which is not compatible with the computer motherboard. It is recommended that you go to the computer to download and install the correct USB driver.

3. It may be caused by the use of an incompatible USB splitter or USB HUB docking station. It is recommended that you use the original cable to connect to the USB interface of the computer.

Troubleshooting for slow data transmission:

1. It may be that the copied files are all small files! If the files are all single small files (such as 10KB or 100KB files), the copy speed will be greatly reduced, which is a normal phenomenon. Please replace a single file larger than 10 GB and test the speed again.

2. It may be the failure of the hard disk installed in the DAS product or the hard disk of the computer itself. Please use the hard disk health detection tool to test and eliminate it, for example: HD Tune.

3. The USB cable used is not the original one, please make sure to use the original USB cable.

4. The USB interface of the computer is faulty, please confirm that you are using a USB 3.0 / USB 3.1 high-speed interface instead of a USB 2.0 interface, and try another USB interface of the computer.

5. Interference from other switching devices, connecting TDAS through a USB HUB splitter or a docking station may cause slow speed. Please try connecting directly to the USB port of the computer.

6. Update the driver of the USB port on your computer.

7. For models that support RAID or implement RAID through third-party software, it is likely that the hard drives are synchronizing, which will take up most of their performance. Please wait for the RAID synchronization to complete before testing the speed again.

I recently punched the terra master D5-300 as an external storage device for my home computer. We have a lot of media files and large Adobe/CAD files. This will allow us to store them more efficiently and with Raid5 provide some fault tolerance.

I have been using the original cable that came in the box and my D5-300 has been randomly rebooting/disconnecting and the transfer rate has been sub 200MB/s.

Following the instructions below I see that the USB port it's plugged into is noticed that it's plugged into a USB 3.1 port. I switched the cable to be a USBC to USBC instead of the USBC to USB cable provided. However, the speed did not improve and I'm still seeing the random reboot/disconnect throughout the day.

I have not enabled the sleep function in the RAID software provided. The event log did not show anything helpful but I am wondering of there are additional logs or a setting to make the log entries more verbose or provide additional depth to the messages.

Any help would be appreciated since it feels like the current situation might not be healthy for the drives in the D5-300.

Thank you

Probably your D5-300 just falls into sleep, as soon as you activate your computer, it will wakeup automaticlly. This sleep feature comes with the device by default, you do not need to set, and it can't disable too. Please double check and let me know.

To varify your transfer speed, you can download some speed test software. https://www.hexapolis.com/2018/07/19/ha ... r-windows/
Please be well noted, transfer speed may be dragged a lot by copying many small size files.
