As this issue does not happen in our lab, please check:
1. Do you connect your D4-300 through a USB HUB or docking station? It is recommended to connect directly to the USB port of the Mac.
2. Do you use the original USB cable? It is recommended to use the original USB cable.
3. Did you do a safe eject action before shutting down your Mac?
4. When the Mac computer is turned on, can you see the external device mounted in the Disk Utility?

1. No, it is directly plugged into the mac mini.
2. Yes, it uses the provided USB cable.
3. Not usually, but I tested doing so and there is no change in behaviour. The shutdown/restart is always clean, i.e. via the proper OSX restart.
4. No, the drives are not visible via Disk Utility either.
