[Discussion] D4-320 Advice  [SOLVED]

Post by rfbjr »

I have 3 x 12TB in my D4-320, configured as a storage pool and directly attached to my F6-424.
I have a 1tb hyper cache assigned to that storage pool.
Sometimes, based up only on sound, it seems that using Hypercaache in this manner isn't the best utilization. It seems with the cache it's faster than the USB connection/D4-320 can accept.

First question, has anybody setup their D4-320 as a storage pool connected to whatever NAS?

I'm going to remove the hypercache on that storage pool and see.

Basically my other devices backup to the F6-424. I tried backing up from the other devices directly the D4-320 (storage pool), it seems to take forever.

I'm just wondering it I should scrap the storage pool and just go back to three 12 TB drives attached via the D4-320?

To get the best performance out of your F6-424 and D4-320 setup, please follow these steps:
Disable HyperCache: As you planned, remove the 1TB cache assignment immediately. This stops the "stop-and-go" behavior you are experiencing.
Keep the Storage Pool: Unless you need raw speed for video editing directly off the drive, keep the RAID configuration for data redundancy.
Check Your that the D4-320 is connected via a high-quality USB cable.

Yes I did disable the cache and I do have a high-quality cable.
I did see an improvement last night with a few tasks.
Thank you.
I guess I could migrate the system disk to the 1TB on the F6, but will see. One change at a time.

out of interest what is the purpose of the hyper cache, does this just speed up read access to the DAS? so if you are accessing it over the network then there is less of a lag when you access it via a nework share?

i use mine as a backup solution so havent played at all with hypercache as its really not needed for me TFM just backups to it over night etc, but its configured as a storage pool on my F2-423 in answer to your original question of how i use the D4-320
