Expanding D5 RAID 5

Hi, sorry for newbie questions but my D5 is my first experience with RAID.
I created RADI5 for 3x12Tb drives, with a view to expanding into the other 2 bays and as I couldn't afford 5 at the time.
I'm now hitting the upper limit after pulling everything off a bunch of other drives and wondering 2 questions:
1) If I were to just put 2 disks into the 2 free bays, would they work as single disk mode alongside my RAID5? Or is it 'all or nothing' situation here? I am still trying to clear out my old drives, so I am kind of in backup limbo at the moment
2) If I were to add 2 new 12Tb drives into the free slots, can I add them to the existing RAID5 without much of a headache? Or do I need to find somewhere else to put everything from my 24Tb then look at rebuilding? (in which case I assume RAID10 would be the better option since I heard RAID5 isn't very safe and don't really fancy a complete raid rebuild if I can avoid it since I believe it will take forever...? These are obviously HDD)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions here!
