How long does initialisation take

I've just bought a TD2 and 2 * WD Red 4TB drives. I installed it all as advised in the manual. I earthed myself when installing drives etc. When I turn on, I get blinking red or orange lights, and have done for about 20 minutes now. How long should this process take, and how do I know whether the LED is red or orange?

Oh, I've established that I had to use the reset function. The device defaults to single drive, and I'd loaded it with two drives.
