GNU Midnight Commander is a visual file manager, licensed under GNU General Public License and therefore qualifies as Free Software. It's a feature rich full-screen text mode application that allows you to copy, move and delete files and whole directory trees, search for files and run commands in the subshell. Internal viewer and editor are included.

Midnight Commander is based on versatile text interfaces, such as Ncurses or S-Lang, which allows it to work on a regular console, inside an X Window terminal, over SSH connections and all kinds of remote shells.

Ah, brilliant! But this is for x86 only, isn't it? Is there a chance to get an arm version too?
I wish TM actually included MC in TOS in the first place.

That would be brilliant, thanks. I am happy to help testing, but I have rather limited relevant "expertise". I have run several linux machines for years, but only as a slightly geeky and curious user, def not a proper serious linux person. But I can install a tpk and report back if it worked.

Any joy with this? Now back at trying to sort out the mess of data I have here, but it is still a pain to organise stuff on the device using the built in file manager through the web interface.
And I just don't get why TM did not just provide a package manager in TOS.

ARM? Where? I can only see the x86 package at the download section.
