Plex Backup from F4-220 to F2-220

Post by Gandalf1369 »

I have a general "back-up" question concerning my Plex Media Server . . . Here's the situation:

I currently have an F4-220 NAS running the latest TOS (1.2.09 with the 1.04 patch). The ONLY application on the NAS is the Plex Media Server. The NAS contains four (4) 5TB hard drives in a RAID 5 array.

Previous to purchasing the F4-220 NAS I had a F2-220 NAS with PMS running on it. As I was beginning to run out of storage space I decided to upgrade to the F4-220. The upgrade went well and migrating from a RAID 1 on the F2-220 to RAID 5 on the F4-220 went without any problems.

The F2-220 NAS is unused at the moment. I was thinking of purchasing two more hard drives of about 6-8TB and setting them up in the F2-220 in a JBOD configuration. This would give me about 14TB of free space to use to back up all my movies, TV shows, videos, and music from the F4 to the F2.

Now for my questions . . . .

1. Is my thinking sound?? I realize that the JBOD configuration would not give me any "faulty drive" protection if anything happened but with the files also present on the F4-220 I think I'll still be fairly safe.

2. What would be the best way to attach the F2 NAS to my network?? Should I attach it via the ethernet port directly to my router or should I use a USB cable and attach it directly to the F4 NAS??

3. Which software should I use for the back-up procedure?? Should I just use the Windows 10 file copying or should I install a dedicated file copying service on the NAS??

Any suggestions, thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you . . .

Hello,
You can connect two TNAS to the same router, and then you can use a computer to connect to the two TNAS via SMB access, and then copy them manually.
You can also enable the Rsync server in the control panel of F2-220, and then log in to F4-220 to use the desktop backup for scheduled backup.
It depends on whether you want to use manual backup or automatic backup.
