F5-422 - DO NOT update 4.2.16 / Fan Control is broken

Post by Kanuki » 14 Oct 2021, 10:46

Hi.. Guys

******************************************************************
Fan Control is broken. It may cause your NAS and HDDs
to overheated and drop out from array.

Please change the fan speed to
"Full Speed --> Apply --> Medium Speed --> Apply --> Full Speed --> Apply"
then monitor your fan speed and temperature as workaround.

Dear TerraMaster

Please release emergency hotfix ASAP.

****************************************************************

My NAS is F5-422. I just updated FOS from 4.2.15 to 4.2.16.

After I updated FOS successfully for 5-10 mins then
I'm starting getting HDD overheating alert.

I thought it was nothing and I ignored and went to sleep.

After I woke up then I found out that my email inbox being spam
by HDD overheating email alert.

Soon after that I started to hear beeping sound from my F5-422.
I've tried to touch my NAS and it's unbearable hot. It's really overheating
and result in one of my HDD dropped out from array. My HDD temperature
went up as high as 85C.

I logged into web management interface and changed Smart Fan control
to full speed. (I forgot to check fan speed before change). After I changed
to full fan speed then the temperature starting to drop.

A few minutes after I changed the fan to full speed. I noticed that fan speed
dropped to 10 RPM. YES.. It's just 10 RPM. I had to re-apply to medium fan speed
then full fan speed again for the fan speed to work again.

I will continue to monitor this. How do I downgrade back to 4.2.15?

Hello! The change of fan working mode is not related to upgrading system, it may be caused by other reasons.
Please confirm again, whether the fan stops rotating after running for a period of time as long as it is in smart mode?
Now that the fan working mode is set to full speed, has the fan speed been as low as 10RPM?

Like I mentioned. As soon as I updated to 4.2.16 then starting to get HDD over temperature warning.
I didn't know what causing that warning message and ignored it before I went to sleep last night.

Then today morning I saw my email inbox was spamming with HDD over temperature email alert
and starting to hear my F5-422 was beginning to make beeping sound. I tried to touch my F5-422
and it was very unbearable hot.

Then I immediately logged on the web management interface to find out what it's causing the issue.
Then I found out that one of my HDD dropped out from the RAID5 array.

Soon after that I found the fan speed control menu and immediately change the fan to full speed
then I found the menu where it's reporting the fan speed RPM. I was the fan was running at full speed
and the temperature was beginning to drop.

A few minutes later, I saw fan speed dropped to 10 RPM and the temperature began to raise again.
I immediately went back to fan speed control menu and set fan speed to medium and applied then
set to full speed again and re-applied.

Then I went back to check at the fan speed and it began to work again and the temperature
began to drop back to normal again.

A few hours later I went to check on fan speed again and the fan is still operating normally
then I changed the fan control to smart control and it's still working fine until now.

Hi... TMSupport.

The fan control problem is getting really bad.
I have to re-apply the fan speed every 10 mins.

Please release emergency fix ASAP...
Before Re-Apply fan control.
Before Re-Apply fan control.
After Re-Apply fan control.
After Re-Apply fan control.

It's very late night already. Is your support still working?

I just did factory default to downgrade OS back to 4.2.15.

I would say it's a dodgy drive rather than the fan.
