Safe to update to 4.2.12 for Plex Server?

Post by Dennis_H »

I saw several posts of issues when people have updated. I have a
F2-221
running
4.2.09-2101251735-P1.06 TOS
and
1.22.3.4392 Plex server

If I update to 4.2.12, am I going to have a bunch of issues and lose the metadata? Has that been addressed or only was in specific cases?

I updated my F2-221 from 4.2.09 to 4.2.12.2104131759 a few days ago.
Plex server 1.22.3.4392 is still working as it was before the update.
F2-221
is my first NAS, bought in October 2020

It nuked mine going from 4.2.10 to 4.2.12. Finally convinced me to say goodbye to TNAS Plex app and I'm now running happily in docker. Had this going for about a week now and Plex seems much more stable/reliable, responds faster, and I can now control updates instead of waiting on Plex/TNAS to release a compatible update in the store. Also don't have to worry about the built in store moving my Plex folder around and killing my config, deleting libraries/playlists/ratings etc. Now that it's in docker I'm in full control to of the data and where it's kept. I've had to start over from scratch a few times thanks to the built in Plex app, so not having to worry about that anymore gives me great peace of mind.

I've read that a downside to Plex in docker is losing native hardware transcoding. Haven't run into this issue yet, but 90% of my Plex usage is for music so it hasn't been an issue and the one video I did try to stream remotely was much faster than it was through my previous Plex setup with the built in app.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the info, I guess I'll give it a shot then. May wait till next weekend though to see if anyone else has an issue.

I thought about doing docker, but really want the ability to transcode if needed. I like the idea of not waiting for updates from TM. I also use it primarily for music (FLAC files), but have also moved all my DVD and BluRay discs over to it. For the most part I don't need to transcode, but do on occasion, so want the hardware transcoding. Will probably try to go to 4.2.12 and see if it nukes it, and if it is OK, probably try to wait till maybe there is a way of doing hardware transcoding in Docker.

I have the same question as the OP. I am currently running TOS 4.2.09 with patch 1.06 installed on a F4-220 (Intel CPU). My Plex Media Server is version 1.21.4.4079 which has been up and running for several months now with no issues. Is it safe to update the TOS to 4.2.12 and also update the Plex Media Server to the latest available from Terr-Master?? Thanks . . .
F5-221 with 4x5TB drives in Raid 5 (Plex Media Server, TOS 4.2.40)
F4-220 with 2x8TB, 1x6TB in JBOD (Docker, PiHole, Uptime-Kuma, tnfsd-x64, TOS 5.1.123)

If it makes a difference, I updated straight from TOS 4.2.09 to 4.2.14 with the latest version of Plex (1.23.2.4656) installed and I've had no issues whatsoever even after multiple reboots.

I now have Plex running in docker with hardware accelerated transcoding working properly. See here for details: viewtopic.php?f=51&t=2236
