F5-420 Fan wiring

Post by justsimon »

Hi, can you provide me with the fan wiring information for the F5-420?
I have some Noctua PWM fans which have blue/green/yellow/black wires, described here:
https://noctua.at/pub/media/wysiwyg/Noc ... _paper.pdf

The original fan uses a JST connector, and has black wiring with one solid black, and the other three are varying length stripes.

I saw in another thread you were able to provide the info for another customer:

Thanks!

I would suspect the wiring will be the same as I can't see then changing it between models its just a simple voltage varied speed control, so you will just need the 12v+ and the negative on the fan, easy to check with a meter.

I was hoping that because the standard fan is 4 pin (the other thread is a 3 pin), that they've implemented PWM properly and just changed the connector.

It'll be good to get a response from Terra-Master, they were good enough to provide it in that other thread.

For the pin definition of F5-420 fan, please refer to the corresponding serial number in the picture.
Definition of fan:
The size of the fan: 80*80*25mm
Power supply voltage of the fan: DC 12V
4pin terminal pitch: 2.5mm
Definition of pin:
Pin1: GND
Pin2: DC12V
Pin3: PWM Signal
Pin4: PWM Speed Signal

I've connected up the fans now, however the RPM doesn't report properly (it says 10RPM) and speed control doesn't work.

These fans are much quieter, so I'm happy with that, but it would be great if they integrated properly.

Do you know why this is occurring?

Hi, yes, I followed your directions. I'm pretty sure I've wired it correctly.
I reconnected the original fans to check if it was a persistent problem, but TOS reports accurate info for them.

Attached are a few images to show:
- my original fan wiring at the connector
- my original fan wiring at the board inside the fan
- screenshot of Noctua white paper
- my cable wiring for the Noctua NF-A8 PWM
- screenshot of fan info with original fans
- screenshot of fan info with Noctua fans
- table comparing wiring info

Below, dashes represent the length of the stripes on the original wiring.

Code: Select all

Info from TM | My fan plug / board | Noctua White Paper | My Wiring
1 = --- / GND            | 1 = - / -           | Black = GND              | 1 = Black / GND
2 = Black / DC12V        | 2 = -- / +          | Yellow = +12V            | 2 = Yellow / +12V
3 = -- / PWM Signal      | 3 = Black / Y       | Green = RPM Speed Signal | 3 = Blue / PWM Signal
4 = - / PWM Speed Signal | 4 = --- / PS        | Blue = PWM Signal        | 4 = Green / RPM Speed Signal

Hi, have you had a chance to look at why I'm not getting the correct fan speed?
