Adding a Spare Drive deletes all data ?!?

Post by donsenilo »

Hi

I want to add a spare drive but TOS warns that all data will be deleted. Is that true ? Why ?

On the new drive yes and because it needs to format it into the correct file system

Your original drive shouldn’t be affected, it can convert your single disk to a raid array without losing data on the first drive

"shouldn’t" sounds not good. I have to be sure because I can't save the data to another drive,

TOS says hard drives (plural !) and not "data on the new hard drive will be deleted". So for my understanding data on ALL hard drives will be deleted.

When you got this prompt what action were you processing? If you were creating a new storage pool and new volume on the drive, then you must know which drive you were operating.

All drives you insert into your tnas will be formatted to ext 4 or btrfs file system, your data on the drive will be erased.

This is a huge problem. Is this always the case or only with Terramaster ?

And what happens when I add the fourth harddrive to the existing RAID5 ? Do I also loose a data ?

Then you only lose data on the forth drive, not the raid 5.

Ok, I'm doing this right now.

And seriously ... I hope this is a joke (1000 hours to synchronise ?!?):
