[Help] Would appreciate some advice on best HDD configuration

Post by BrickHardmeat »

I've recently purchased an F2-425 Plus which I'm extremely happy with in general but I do have a problem I'd like to resolve.

I've got two 1TB SSD's and two 24TB Ironwolf Pro drives installed.

Storage Pool 1 is the first SSD that's set as the system disk. Storage Pool 2 is the second SSD which is exclusively for my docker containers, one of which is Jellyfin which I use regularly. Storage Pool 3 is for the two Ironwolf Pro drives for all of my media - movies, tv shows, music etc. All file systems are BTRFS and everything is set to TRAID.

The main issue I have is that I'm currently using the default sleep settings of 30 minutes for the hard drives so whenever I want to use Jellyfin to watch some media, there's a noticeable delay while the drives wake up.

I didn't experience this on DSM with my old Synology NAS but I assume that's likely because the drives never actually slept.

Would it cause any major issues if I turned off the sleep settings or is there a more efficient solution ?. Thanks.

Hello! You can disable disk hibernation, as this feature is not mandatory. Additionally, you can check the hibernation status of a disk by entering the following command in the terminal: hdparm -C /dev/sdX (where sdX refers to the disk name, such as sda, sdb).

Appreciate the reply, thankyou.

I've disabled the hibernation but it doesn't seem to have fully addressed the issue.

If I launch the Jellyfin Fire TV app I've just counted it took 13 seconds to load before I could access the media which is horrible and certainly not what I experienced on my old Synology.

If I come out of Jellyfin and go straight back in then it launches instantly, as you'd imagine it would running on an SSD, but if I go off and do something else then I still have the delay.

I did reboot the nas after i disabled the hibernation as well, just in case.

Hello, when launching the Jellyfin Fire TV app, you can enter the 'top' command in the NAS terminal to see which processes or services are running.

Thankyou but I do think I've finally fixed it.

I'd set up a DDNS address using duckdns and purely out of habit, I'd used that address when configuring Jellyfin on the Fire TV. I removed that last night and re-did the configuration using the IP address of the NAS instead since I'm at home on my home network so there's no need for external access.

When I accessed Jellyfin like that it was instant - 2 seconds at most. I wanted to leave it for a longer period of time just to be sure so I waited until this morning (in the UK) and I've just tried it again and it's still instant access so I'm pretty sure that's the reason.

It's a habit I had with my old Synology on DSM I suppose so I need to make sure I stop doing that :)
