I've been having similar VPN problems.

On OpenVPN connections after some time (hours) the connection stays listed as connected, but the "internet" line on the TNAS desktop dashboard says disconnected, if I disconnect the VPN or connect to a different VPN profile it reestablished the internet connection.

On L2TP connections I have the issue as mentioned in the original post.

We are waiting patiently and following the forum. Earlier you said it would be fixed in the subsequent version, the subsequent version did not contain the fix. It seems you are not delivering on your commitments.

When using public IP to connect, if the public IP changes, the connection will be disconnected, and you need to use the new public IP to create a connection.
The option "Reconnect when VPN connection is lost" is available in TOS 5.
