TNAS F4-210 Question: internal USB flash disk

Post by wnpaul »

Still trying to figure out my new TNAS F4-210.

What exactly is the purpose of the USB flash disk inside the unit?

The built-in USB flash is a boot-up system, it's important and necessary to start and run the TOS system. Please do not remove it.

Except it's not: after you install TOS, taking it out and putting in a bootable UnRaid usb stick *does nothing*: rather than booting into unraid, you still end up in TOS, so clearly it's not needed (or if it is, it is not doing what you suggest).

the F4-210 seems to boot into TOS without needing this usb device once it's installed.

When your device is initialized and TOS is installed into your hard drives, you can remove the built-in USB flash and the device could be used normally still.

As soon as TOS installed on your drives, system will boot from your drives instead of USB. If you want your TOS reboot from USB again, you have to remove your drives, or you have to delete all the volumes and storage pools on your drives.
