F4-220 not booting after New TOS install after blackout.

Post by Nutters » 08 Oct 2021, 15:20

After a blackout, on a previously running system (sorry, no UPS then) TOS is now not recognised with 4 drives.
These are the steps I took:
1. Removed all drives, turned on the device.
2. Opened TNAS PC software, found device and opened it via the web browser. The TNAS web interface gave an error: "No drives installed."
3. With the device on, inserted all four drives.
4. The web interface asked to install TNAS software or use existing. I chose to install new. Note: This showed a message stating that all drive data will be erased, but it will not so I ignored it
5. Allowed the software to auto-download and install.
6. The reboot notification was given after downloading and installing TOS
7. The system hung as soon as it notified a reboot was under way. -network connection was lost.
Now unable to reboot with all red leds showing for the drives and no network connection.
This scenario just cycles.
BTW these drives are NOT Raid , but single BTFS drives with no protection as I have remote backups of the data.
I am happy to format the system drive (I can't figure out how) in case there is corruption somewhere but I don't really want to lose the data on the other BTFS drives if I can help it.

But.... if I only insert one system drive, without any more drives, everything goes well all the way to the desktop until I insert another drive then when I attempt to create a Volume or Pool it wants me to confirm I will lose all data on that drive. -these drives were working as a single disk BTFS drives before the blackout.
Is this expected behavior that you cannot add previous working drives into a new TOS?
What can I do to retain the data on the other drives? Am I doing in the wrong order? What am i doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

The default main system drive is the first drive you installed to your TNAS. your system partition or file system was crashed because of a power outage, so your system failed to load. The thing I can't be sure of is that if your data partition is fine. if you want our tech team to check for you, you can write an email to our tech team and ask for a remote session. if your data partition is damaged and can't be repaired, then you need to contact a data recovery company for a data recovery service.

Thank you for the prompt reply.
If the data on the other drives are OK, is there a particular order of inserting the drives to use them as is?
eg,
1. insert them after the system has booted on the new TOS,
or
2. insert them prior to booting?
or
3. nothing can save the data on them because the new TOS eliminates all previous drives by creating a unique ID's for each drive at every fresh TOS install?

Thanks

Hi.
It is better that you insert them prior to booting, in a different order.
By the way, What is your TOS version before you reinstall it?

Currently TOS is 4.2.15-2107221409

I will try what you have suggested. Thanks

OK,
things have gone somewhat sideways since this posting both health wise of me and the NAS.
So I apologise for the delay in getting back to the forum.
The TOS WILL now boot with the primary drive inserted.
But....the admin password is now not accepted even though I had registered it with Terramaster.
Even password retrieval does not recognise my email address. -maybe I stuffed that up too.

Test1 -reinstall TOS . -Removed all drives and reboot. -the NAS fails to initialise or to see the network for TNAS to see it.

My suspicion now is the initialisation process is corrupted and this is done by the USB stick on the motherboard.
Because I can't log into the NAS I can't use Putty, VMware and Ubuntu and re-image it with bzImage.img as suggested by other posts.
https://forum.terra-master.com/cn/viewt ... =79&t=1511
https://download2.terra-master.com/inst ... il_en.docx

Test2.I tried a fat formated USB with the bzImage.img on it and boot without drives installed and keep it on the local network for at least 15 minutes as suggested by another post but it didn't make any difference.
viewtopic.php?f=76&t=1455

So without an admin log-in, or the ability to re-install TOS I have no direct access to the NAS.
(In saying this, with all drives installed, PLEX still streams- YAY!)

What have I missed? -I would appreciate any suggestions that I can try.
