I solved the boot problem as described above.
The BIOS update worked, thank you. The TNAS was powered down for the last three mornings.

UPDATE
After updating the BIOS I had trouble with this always on screen

booting from INIT system
- To fix I unplugged all the drives again
- Started NAS - still stuck on INIT
- Plugged back in drives
- System started normally - HOORAY
